Ep. 80: Paul Jay on his Bret Hart documentary Wrestling With Shadows

Paul Jay is the director of the 1998 award-winning documentary Wrestling With Shadows, which recorded Bret Hart’s last year in the then WWF, now WWE, leading up to the Montreal Screwjob of Survivor Series 1997, the most infamous moment in pro-wrestling history.
On that day the animosity between the then Champion Bret Hart and the challenger Shawn Michaels escalated. Hart was on his way out of the federation and didn’t want to lose the title to Michaels. He had contractual rights to decide that, so the owner of WWE Vince McMahon, not wanting his champ to go to the competition still as a champion, had to come up with a screwy finish that will change the wrestling business forever.
